“Once social change begins it cannot be reversed. You cannot uneducate the person who has learned to read. You cannot humiliate the person who feels pride. You cannot oppress the people who are not afraid anymore.”

~Cesar Chavez, labor leader and civil rights activist, from his address to the Commonwealth Club on November 9, 1984

Tell that to the Taliban. They turned a relatively modern Afghanistan society back into the Dark Ages .

I wish Chavez was right. There are twice as many black men in jail now as in 1964 when the Civil Rights laws were passed. White men and black men consume drugs at the same rate, but black men are incarcerated at four times the rate. Creationism is being taught in Florida and Texas as valid natural history "theories" equivilent to Darwinism. The hisotry of the Jewish people shows that things can go backward very quickly. Chavez has more vision and more hope than some of us.
