Really Doug? Really?

Yes, really. Somehow we care less for justice than vengeance and the pretense of certainty we "got it right" in the face of all evidence that we didn't. He died at peace. God rest his soul.

My comment was in reference to Doug's incessant plugs for his web site. Note that the moderator has edited his post and removed it. I thought the use of this tragedy to promote himself was going too far.

I had to explain this to my young children this morning when they saw it on the front of our paper. I wrote a bit about what I told them on my own blog --

This is almost as bad as abortion.

Were I in the place of the family whose loved one was murdered, I am sure that I would want the one who took that beloved's life to die as well - swiftly.  But in the last analysis, what does the death penalty really accomplish?  What does it change?

Vengeance has nothing to do with "justice". It is grounded in the mistaken idea that if you cause another person to suffer then you will feel better. It doesn't and its a really primative concept and means of coping.
We think cultures that put such emphasis on vengeance are backwards and barbaric yet, hear we are...embracing this means of "punishment" for the worse or crimes.
There are worse punishments than death....like living a life trying to compensate for something that can never ever be made right!!!!

Another sacrificial lamb?
