Ursula King, David Sloan Wilson and Andrew Revkin —
Teilhard de Chardin's "Planetary Mind" and Our Spiritual Evolution

The coming stage of evolution, Teilhard de Chardin said, won't be driven by physical adaptation but by human consciousness, creativity, and spirit. We visit with his biographer Ursula King, and we experience his ideas energizing New York Times Dot Earth blogger Andrew Revkin and evolutionary biologist David Sloan Wilson.

Many thanks to Krista and the On Being team for a tremendous series of interviews on the philosophy of Teilhard de Chardin. Teilhard's ideas are even more relevant today than when they were written and you are doing a great service to discuss them. I would recommend that you include additional resources on the works of Teilhard. Some of the best include:

The American Teilhard Association: http://www.teilharddechardin.org/

Works of Louis Savary (who along with Ursula King are the two best authors on the life and works of Teilhard).

The Galactic Milieu series by Julian May (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galactic_Milieu_Series) which a science fiction series that describes a not-too-distant future which shows in the evolution of humanity based on Teilhardian concepts.

The Hymn of the Universe, which was quoted in the interview is available online:

Thank you again for a wonderful podcast and interviews.

Another great show. Optimists such as myself believe that each person's essential nature is love, so any behavior that doesn't seem to come from love, comes from the illusion that we are not all connected and interdependent.
My understanding of the noosphere is that it is a super-consciousness of humans, that our mind is like a two way radio both receiving and transmitting thoughts subconsciously. Technology then, is only making the process more conscious and accelerated.

Will you be posting the story of the 13 year old girl who walked with Teilard in the park?

That was Jean Houston, who recounts the story of her twice (?) weekly walks in Central Park w/ "Mr Tayer" in one of her books (The Possible Human?) and many of her talks. It had a profound impact on her life and thought.

By sheer 'happenstance' I met and chatted with Jean Houston, on a plane flight enroute to or from India sometime in the '70s. It was only later that I learned of her having taken walks with Teilhard when she was young and living in NYC. Very nice story, and she told it beautifully. I have read it but cannot remember the source. In fact I had been trying to recall the name of Jean Houston, and here I have finally found it.

So many Atheists complain about religion due to its ancient roots, for its trying to carry the ancient (to them) too far forward. But here we have a Catholic priest of all people, describing a foundation for religion as if taking the future and bringing it backward to us here.
I was introduced to the concept of a Universal Noosphere in the child's story "The Last Question" by Isaac Asimov. It was given to me by my father, likely unwittingly, as Dad didn't follow SF (but He Was a religious man). That story changed my personal theology quite a bit. Checking years later it was found that the Asimov story came out just after the publication of "The Phenomenon of Man" - and I am looking for more on this possible connection. The author Tom Wolfe also talks insistingly about a connection, between de Chardin and Marshall McLuhan. McLuhan wrote of his idea of "The Global Village" 6 years after 'Phenomenon'. The modern Catholic Theologian John F. Haught gave us a great lecture on unifying religion and science and de Chardin was featured prominently again. Always an interesting subject.
Your show then comes to me as if a Christmas gift. Thank-You for this gift.

This program and all three unedited conversations have wetted my appetite for Teilhard, again. He is a lot of work. I love the story about the 13 year old who met him in the park for walks. That is useful.
I have been working on John MacMurray’s writings for a number of years. I think he and Teilhard are on the same wavelength. Here is an excerpt from, REASON AND EMOTION (first published 1935).

“We are so accustomed to think that science is
knowledge that we overlook the fact that it pre-
supposes knowledge. We have an immediate living
experience of the world which is both more primitive
and more concrete than any knowledge which is the
result of deliberate reflection. And this knowledge science can
never deny without cutting the ground from under
its feet.”

This being ‘said’ MacMurray sees science as the most fully developed of our three major institutions (art and religion are the other two).

A program that includes a John MacMurray scholar might be useful
Thank you, David

One thing leads to another and before you know it you're so far from the original post. I have found an e version of The Last Question and will be reading it...when I have the time. Thanks for the thoughtful post; it's what it's all about! Feliz Navidad.

Thank you once again for thought-provoking interviews, giving a broader perspective to our daily lives.

Dear Krista, as always, such a delight and inspiration to listen to your program this morning; it all seemed so perfectly helpful at a time of great tragedy here in Connecticut and as Christmas comes. Christmas blessings to you and yours. Jane Kellogg, Hamden CT (Trinity Church on the Green, New Haven)

I first read Teilhard as a senior in college back in 1960, and continued to read him during my years in the seminary -- in Rome!

I've taught an advanced undergraduate course over the years on "The Classics of Spirituality," and have used "The Divine Milieu" as the final reading of the course.

I appreciate the program dedicated to Teilhard and welcome the continuing interest in his thinking. But I think that the heart of the matter was slighted in the presentations.

For Teilhard at the heart of his vision is Jesus Christ who is both the center and the goal of the Divine Milieu. This is why Teilhard's great friend and advocate Henri de Lubac holds that part of Teilhard's achievement was to recover the "cosmic Christology" of the Pauline Epistles.

So thank you for what you have done in the program; but it's like a glass only half full. You only offered some of the good wine.

Christmas wishes!

Dear Father Robert:

Thank you for your insightful comments. I agree with you that the Cosmic Christ is at the very heart of Teilhard's worldview and any attempt to separate his philosophy from his Christian faith does a disservice to both Teilhard and the Church. I share your view that Teilhard does a wonderful job of taking the core of the Christian faith, all the way from its earliest writings, and show how modern science and philosophy reaffirm these ancient truths.

However, as a faithful and practicing Catholic, I am also frustrated that the Catholic Church is has yet to fully embrace Teilhard. Interestingly, I first came across Teilhard by reading a wonderful book "Introduction to Christianity", first published in 1968 and written by a brilliant young theologian at the University of Tübingen, Joseph Ratzinger. I was hopeful that as Father Ratzinger moved up the ranks to Bishop, to Cardinal, to head of CDF, to the Chair of St. Peter, he would lead a rehabilitation of Teilhard, or at a minimum, expunge the cryptic 1962 warning. Despite continuing positive references to Teilhard by Pope Benedict, the 1962 warning still remains and Teilhard remains at the periphery of Catholic theology.

Father, I pray that you and others will continue to carry out the work of the Kingdom, including sharing the message of Teilhard's evolutionary Christianity.

Peace and Merry Christmas!

I wonder if, maybe, just maybe, his ideas (Tiehard's) are just the natural evolution of any optimistic thinking. Of course I have had exposure to these ideas but not enough to be so highly developed as my belief system is. It seems to me that its a natural process involving positive thinking. I guess I could be complimenting myself but that is okay -- as I love connecting up with some of the most powerful and energizing thoughts in our evolving minds.

What a wonderful surprise it was this morning to hear the discussion about Teilhard De Chadin ! ! I was driving up to Maine and the discussion enriched the trip for me
A quote in The Pilot, the newspaper of the Archdiocese of Boston, was my introduction to this learned and engaging philosopher.I found his books and added them to to my library for constant reference and enlightenment.
Ever since then I use excerpts from his writings when I speak to groups Only once has a listener responded with a knowledge of Teilhard.I dare say that today there would would be no mention of this genius philosopher in The Pilot given the super conservative turn of the recent and current Church leadership.
" A passionate longing to grow,to be is what we need. There is no room for the pessimists, the weary , the immobilizes, the sad of heart. Life is change. Life is movement."
This is off the top of my head so may not be a perfect quote But, this is the essence of the quote that caught my attention many years ago.. .

It seems to me this man's knowledge of evolution is somewhat incomplete (and it also seems to me problematic to invoke the supernatural or a god when it comes to evolution and genetics). To state that evolution may be driven by consciousness is too speculative for me (as someone fairly well versed in evolution and someone who deals with the genetics of cancer on a daily basis). With that said, I do subscribe to the ideals of humanist philosophy - but I also realize 99.9+ percent of all organisms on this planet have gone extinct and that we will suffer the same fate. While it may be nice to think that in some way we are special and that there is a god that exists or cares for us, the reality is, imo, there is no evidence for such things. It seems to me we are only special because we choose to define ourselves in a special way or seek out characteristics that seem "special" to the human species. When you start out thinking we are special you will likely only find the evidence to support your premise. This is not scientific reasoning and should not be presented as such.

"All that exists obeys. Man alone occupies a unique status.
As a natural being he obeys, as a human being he must
frequently choose; confined in his existence, he is unre-
strained in his will. His acts do not emanate from him like
rays of energy from matter. Placed in the parting of the ways,
he must time and again decide which direction to take. The
course of his life is, accordingly, unpredictable; no one can
write his autobiography in advance."

excerpt from, I Asked for Wonder
by Abraham Joshua Heschel
It isn't that we 'define ourselves in a special way', it is that we define ourselves.

There doesn't seem to be anything supernatural about Teilhard de Chardin's God. To me it is a big mistake to nail God down in my mind as supernatural. From my ecological perspective I look into the heavens and have a point of view different from one possible 2 or three thousand years ago. We have much more factual information about the extent of and the age of the cosmos. We are, as Epictetus, an early Christian and understandably stoic slave of a Roman officer said, tiny specks and have no alternative but humility. We are a parts, specks, but are part of the whole, and our ecological magnitude is as vast as the cosmos. We have much more factual information now. Astrologers were recognizing patterns, and the zodiac was an early attempt to make sense of the patterns in a materialistic deterministic universe. It helps to be empathic with the early thinkers, but to realize we have the Hubble Telescope now, but will have an even more powerful and high def one in a few years. We have learned about the chemistry of life, and have much informatrion about what takes place at not only the cellular level, but also way beyond the cellular level. THe more we learn the bigger and more mysterious, and the more we appreciate in our hearts the vastness that goes inward and outward and points toward what Rev. Rudolph Otto called the mysterium tremendum and fascinans. From my perspective God is the God of Nature. Teilhard de Chardin recognized this. He was first a scientist: This is obvious in The Planetary Mind. There is the probability that there are billions of star centered planetary systems that have just the right goldilocks conditions for life. Not just one planetary mind, but countless others. Jesus is not a magician, but an ethical teacher. He learned from children before their minds were polluted. He taught with metaphor and parable. From my perspective he was more likely to have taught dialectically rather than didactically. One particular skill among many was to get assemblies of people, from small groups to crowds, to discover their hereditary capacity for altruism, sharing, and emotional self-acceptance. His metaphoric teachings were converted by a class conscious dominance eierarchy into miracles, leaving the ethical value and promising eternal life to gullible immpoverished followers. It is time to stop that stuff. Papa Francesco is arousing the spirits of many into the direction I am imagining. AMy point of view is personal, just one of many possible. Maybe we will have mosaic vision some day, as we share in ways Teilhard de Chardin must truly have dreamed of. What would he think now? What would Jesus think now? Don't think there is no God just because there isn't a tyranical man in the sky!

Thank you for your leading edge leadership. The Tielhard program was outstanding. Might I suggest a whole series devoted to the work of Thomas Berry, who was the President of the American Tielhard Association for 10 years. Interview subjects might include Sr. Joan Chittister, Mary EvelynTtucker, Sr. Miriam McGillis, (Genesis Farm) and physicist Brian Swimme. More possible interviewies can be found on http://www.crle.org/thomasberry.asp and the Greenbsorough, Vt. Thomas Berry Center.

Yes, wonderful show. De Chardin's philosophy was an integral part of my formative spiritual search as a teen and young man. While i had certainly thought about his evolution to a divine milieu i havent revisited his writing. I now have two teenage girls and wonder sometimes about the effect of their constant electronic networking on their social, psychological and spiritual development. An apprehension of the noosphere? Maybe that can be the story we choose, as in the life of pi.? I'll be revisiting teilhard's writing thanks to this good show. Thank you!

Thank you so much for introducing me to the work of Teilhard. His ideas on the intersection of science and theology, articulated through the lens of a "planetary mind" or a consciousness of nature, resonate deeply with me.

At the risk of sounding too Scrooge-like on this Christmas Eve, I, too, have a belief in a noosphere, although mine is spelled Noahsphere (as in the Noah of the Old Testament). As I define God in terms of Nature, I believe that our planet may very well be headed toward a modern Noah Day of Reckoning wherein Mother Nature purges the earth with cataclysmic weather events that could destroy billions and billions of people, perhaps in our generation. It hurts me profoundly to express this. But even Bill McKibben may acknowledge that we have already eclipsed a point of no return with regards to the levels of greenhouse gases. Our collective culture has made so many toxic, greedy, violent, hubristic choices, a global re-set button may need to be hit.

Unfortunately, as in the time of Noah, that would mean many innocent, good people would also perish. When I was a young boy in Sunday School, hearing the story of The Flood, I always thought it was so unfair that so many of Noah's neighbors (not to mention all of the animals that didn't make it on the ark) were punished with death for simply disagreeing with his rather apocolyptic prophecy. I still do. And yet now I find myself espousing a similar conjecture. Ultimately, however, I retain hope. I must. I have energy for nothing but. It is a hope that we still have time to turn this thing around before Nature shrugs us off. Like Candide, I find that hope in my garden where I can learn to cultivate nurturance.

With the Solstice/Soulstice/Soilstice of the past week, the Light is returning. May we all dwell in it and find peace as we heal this fragile, resilient, conscious earth. (And I must also remember that the tale of Scrooge is ultimately one of redemption! :)

thank you very much for the clarity of presentation of Teilhard's thought. Though I can most easily feel his idea, I often find it hard to understand/explain him, if you know what I mean. The interviews were so helpful to me, and so hopeful.

Thanks for yet another great discussion! We are experiencing, no we are feeling the growing consciousness or "shift" very profoundly here in Ecuador. Not so much the internet will lead us but the people who are so connected to the earth.

I will finally read the book my grandmother recommended to me 40 years ago. I had been hesitant to dive in previously because it seemed a little daunting but your discussions will provide some signposts. I guess coincidentally, Institute of Noetic Science sent me a link to a very recent discussion with Jean Houston where she relates the story about her friendship with Teilhard at 11:10. Here is the link (i hope it works): http://trans.noetic.org/site/R?i=x0sRU_jgQppcAHQ87xPd_Q

Presented for your consideration: the Global Consciousness Project www.teilhard.global-mind.org This long-term, international, field-research initiative was inspired, in part, by de Chardin's notion of the noosphere. It strikes me that Mr. Revkin's statement can be applied to the Project's findings: "It's not just a function of computing power; there's something else that's going on."

FABULOUS podcast on Teilhard--THE amazing future of spirituality in a green revolutionary world!

For those in the Toronto, Ontario, area who are interested in Teilhard, consider going to the new play "The de Chardin Project" which will be produced in Toronto February 7-17, 2013 at the Theatre Passe Muraille.. For more information on the play, see the following website: http://thequickeningtheatre.com/

TEILHARD is a great Catholic philosopher who neatly bridges the fictional gap between Christianity and Science, and forecasts the evolutionary course of consciousness.

Dear Krista,
I have enjoyed your show enormously and look forward to a new discovery or insight each week. Have you interviewed Dr. Herbert Benson, the basic researcher of the Relaxation Response? He documented the the human physiologic response to stress, describing it as the opposite of the "flight or fight" response initially thought to be voodoo medicine, at Harvard Medical school, his work and concepts have gone mainstream in Medicine? I would love to hear him expound upon this.

I listened to this story in the show archives and found it interesting given that I have been reading a lot of Ernesto Cardenal's poetry and he was heavily influenced by Teilard de Chardin. I disagree with something that your guest said about the moral dilemma that we face when choosing between 1) a change to alternative energies and 2) higher costs on the poor. These are two separate issues and two separate problems. The poor pay higher costs for everything already and this is not just an outcome of the capitalist system but one defining aspect of the capitalist system. Our insatiable desire to obtain more material wealth and goods is also a defining characteristic of capitalism and is what drives us to scour the Earth for energy sources to fuel our unsustainable system. We must reflect on our participation in this capitalist model to begin with and, returning to Teilhard de Chardin, realize that capitalism is a very primitive stage that should be and will be left behind as humans and the planet evolve.

I first encountered Teihard as a young novice in a religious congregation in the 1960s. Reading the forbidden was exciting.
Now decades later I serendipitously listened to this program about Teilhard while reading "The Idea Factory" the story of Bell Labs by Gertner. The confluence of the spiritual and scientific ideas is electric. Memory is a poor thing if it only works backwards.

Wonderful site. I hope (plan) to keep in touch.
Thank you.

Very good, this show was so informative. I learned a lot and will be digging deeper into this subject thanks, Krista.

Outstanding show Krista and team! I am a huge fan of Teilhard de Chardin. I strongly believe that his insights are even more relevant today during his lifetime. I have started a blog devoted to following his ideas at www.teilhard.com.

I first discovered Teilhard in a Catholic Seminary course and fell in love with the ideas. Growing up in public schools and going to secular universities I was so divided between my knowledge of evolution and my faith. I know they were compatable but wasn't sure how. Biblical scholarship showed me how to interpret Genesis non literally but Teilhard showed me how it all fit together.

so, chardin speaks of evolution as taking on a stage with regard to { vis-à-vis or in respect of, or with reference to, or a propos of} human beings that has much more to do with human consciousness than physical adapation and survival. look, this leads to those sort of statements that we need to use with a lot of caution. what sort? david sloan wilson says in one sense the origin of man was just another species, but in another sense we were and are an entirely new evolutionary process and one so marked that we might think of it as in some ways as significant as the evolution of life, by which he means organic life. okay, that would be okay, i suppose, if we were able to say that perhaps such hyperbole—with the aim of being inspirational—could make us feel good without making us feel ‘better,’ for perhaps such hyperbole could be slightly reworded and applied as well to the whale, for there is a huge amount about the life of the albatross and the colonies of coral that we really don’t know about, so better for the consciousness and intelligence nurturing of our kind if we say such things in a way where we aren’t being ridiculously silly by needing to feel good by feeling ‘better.’ sure, we might be able to say something like what wilson says—maybe... this one i find particularly tentative—if it simply means focusing on how Life is expressing HerSelf a propos of {or in respect of, or with reference to, or with regard to} humanity while knowing She is expressing HerSelf with reference to the Bristelcone Pine and selkie in ways worthy of eliciting exclamations, too.
but to the point being made concerning humankind. de Chardin in citing the evolution of consciousness, which is what richard bucke wrote about in cosmic consciousness as well, has to do with us having the means for intensifying our communication by way of cybespace, and he prayed as do many of us, that this theater could become a space, growing and growing even as the script for this stage has to do with matters of world peace and dynamic caring, priorities that raise the great teaching concerning love of neighbor as self to a visible, palpable reality of social living!!!!!!!!!!
alas, that is not what we’ve seen being done on this stage. at best, we’ve seen political scenes that have been influenced in a way that exposes the mindset of those like anwar congo and the other anti-heroes of joshua oppenheimer’s documentary the act of killing which makes us more aware of all too many besides these indonesian mass murderers. and that awareness might be applied in the world of realpolitik for our good... we hope. but so far, all too many in our anglo cluster of cultures want to strike it rich with the newest ‘game’ that is not short on the very kind of violence that congo and his kind use to fuel their imaginations. yea, de chardin spoke of intensifying our communication worldwide, but what are we doing, what are we doing with that capacity?
the place to dare to seek to change has to do with media and the issue of the violence we put before our faces constantly. and down the line from that, the culture of idolatry we have made the second most striking feature of our cluster that does not serve the main well at all. yea, we need those who standout in ways that are substantially meaningful, the artists worthy of our canon, the scientists who are in the thick of the scientific establishment’s quest for truth, but we are not lending the kind of support to one another that we could as long as we focus with such adoration on so few, all too many of the entertainment field who’d serve us best by not living out the jet set opportunities that are kept dangling like a child’s mobile before our eyes all the days of our lives when we might have the vision and hope for us as us, with full-scale imagination going at it, before our eyes and attached to our arms.
what do i mean by ‘full-scale imagination going at it?’ we could have a cooperative culture, where we have graduated from being homo economico and have become homo narrandus, where the shared narrative with its aspiration has us involved in lives engaged with each other providing for one another, that features this kind of care and providing each other with enrichment scenes, so that we all have, if we can manage to do this with an economy focused on providing shelter, good nourishment, healthcare, and daily social activities rounded by the kind of ample vacation time found in nordic cultures where another focus for vocation, along with education and healthcare, is the vacation vocation, that is, we provide one another with opportunities with these vacations to pursue our interests—a week at a village where beers are made, for that is the hobby of more than a few; ten days at the community where you are involved in producing Hamlet, as you’ve been preparing for being Horatio for months, while your son is eager to learn how to be a cameraman; or going to the jazz festival in new orleans where you are going to play the sax in a band that will rehearse several hours a day; or headed out on a two-week trek on the appalachian trail; or to swimmer’s camp with two workouts a day; or the traditional beach vacation on St. Johns or in Costa Rica!

A fine show. What a thoughtful and well read interviewer of valuable thinkers on this subject.

That we need to continuously increase the food supply for human consumption in order to meet the needs of a growing population is a colossal misperception, bereft of a foundation in science.

Human population dynamics is essentially similar to, not different from, the population dynamics of other species. How are we to do anything with regard to the global predicament spawned by skyrocketing human population numbers if we cannot widely share and consensually validate an adequate understanding, based upon the best available science, of why human numbers have been growing so rapidly? The science of human population dynamics has been a taboo topic for too long. I have come to believe that top rank scientists and other self-proclaimed experts are acting as deliberate defenders of current, conventional, preternatural thought and willful deniers of new scientific research regarding the human population. That you are willing to say something about what you see regarding human population dynamics takes intellectual honesty and uncommon courage.

We appear to live in a time in which humankind’s perception has fractured schizophrenogenically and clarity of vision has been lost; when incoherent minds determine what was real; a period of abject intellectual dishonesty and the absence of moral courage. Political convenience, economic expediency, specious demographics, ideological idiocy, social status quo, religious dogma, cultural prescription and incomprehensible greed rule the world, reign supreme, darken the surface of Earth and threaten future human well being and environmental health.

Individually and collectively, human beings cannot make a difference that makes a difference if we continue not to question the ubiquitously broadcasted delusions by the world leaders of my generation who are directing our youth down a ‘primrose path’ to surely precipitate the utter extirpation of global biodiversity, the irreversible degradation of Earth’s environs, the reckless dissipation of its limited resources and the destruction of life as we know it. The very thing our leaders claim to be protecting and preserving for children everywhere and coming generations.

Krista, once again I have spent an intriguing "50 minute hour" listening to your show and feeling so many questions and thoughts coming up throughout. Perhaps, I am a pessimist about a Chardinian world consciousness ever being in anything but the smaller degrees benign and never less than inherently "incendiary" at its optimal level. What if "consciousness" is not about creating the 'peaceable kingdom' on earth, but something a bit more dynamic than that. What if the "mind" and "creation" are only vibrant in their many disparate and combustible combinations, always challenging our ability to be adaptively and wisely compassionate, never stopping, and only waiting to be released again in the next Big Bang?

I was so glad to hear such an interesting conversation as well as the host's obvious joy at reading the words of Teilhard!

Riveting! Fascinating topic and person (Teihard de Chardin). I'm still struck by how the information presented made me more conscious of our connectedness to each other. I love it! I'll soon tune in again for more. Thank you.

Thank you for the marvelous introduction to Teilhard's life and work- it is so exciting to consider human kind's continued evolution with new capacities for connectedness. I am glad to hear the threads of optimism in his work and also in the words of Andrew Revkin. I have just finished reading Karen Armstrong's "History of Myth" which describes the necessity of finding new ways of making meaning for life through art since old traditions have faded for most people. The idea of making the entire planet a sacred object is a thrilling solution.

Your show of 1/26 was fascinating and I hope I can attach an except from something I'm writing

I loved the podcast and think you're work is very interesting, David Sloan Wilson. I appreciate what your work has only begun teaching me and hope to continue learning more about your work.

Electromagnetic imprint of DNA goes with you in the death transition !! Multi-life history/experience/form holding patterns in Junk DNA ! Unseen IMPERISHABLE “bodies” in human aura! Brain is not the mind! Mind based upon mental (or reasoning) body of aura! Mind goes with you in death !!

“There is only one way to prepare yourself for the death transition and that is by the acceptance that it is only the physical demise which takes place. The soul, spirit, MIND, and emotional energy continue to exist. When you pass, you are who you are. You do not become enlightened through passing. Book Source: The Only Planet of Choice – Briefings from Deep Space (Chapter 18 page 302)

NOTE : I lost both of my parents at their early age of 57. This caused me to launch a part-time fifty year study of “What comes next after death?” Topics researched were such as the Mother Mary apparition messages, a variety of religion beliefs other than my former Catholic (though still a Christian), atheists rationale, the paranormal, quantum physics, biology, genomics, OBEs, NDEs,messages from the afterlife, instrumental transcommunication (ITC) via phone, tapes and TV, UFOs' objectives, and extraterrestrial messages, trying to find out answers, primarily thru books, science magazines, and numerous websites, obviously with a very open mind.

I was particularly interested in answering this question: How can it be that it is possible to contact afterdeath personalities as if they were still of full mental capability --- via paranormal MEDIUMS, or even by special ITC electronic communications, as has been demonstrated repeatedly? As a retired engineer/executive, I needed to understand exactly HOW “mechanically”or structurally this could be possible. I FOUND THE ANSWER: Electromagnetic/energetic version of DNA --- and unseen IMPERISHABLE body aura containing the mind ---- go with you in your death transition!!

Two books in particular provided key answers, and both were most believable due to being very comprehensive and "scientific" though not related to much of Christian/Judeo training.  Below I have compiled short summaries and excerpts for your possible interest. Also, a short list of books that reinforced these two.  I hope you will keep an open mind in reading them. An old Chinese proverb states: "A mind is like a parachute. It only functions when it is OPEN."

To summarize the first book, a lengthy dictation by a benevolent extraterrestrial group Guardian Alliance, it teaches SCIENTIFIC EVOLVEMENT: 1) Your electromagnetic or energetic version of DNA goes with you in the death transition. 2) you will reincarnate repeatedly and the JUNK DNA holds your personal multi-life history and experience. 3) Your invisible aura is the source/basis of your mind and morphogenetic imprints for holding patterns, non-physical attributes, specific cell development.  4)Your consciousness will next progress eventually through fifteen dimensions toward “nirvana” perfection, currently being in the third.  All other dimensions are unseen and have different vibrational frequencies and atomic configurations.  5) After incarnation as Buddha, Christ as a highly advanced entity/spirit came to us as a teacher from the twelfth or higher dimension. 6) God is the Universe Prime Creator/Force/Source, and not the god Yahweh of the Old Testament who was an Ancient Astronaut to Earth.

As dictated by Ascended Masters, key messages in the second book were: 1) There are other unseen IMPERISHABLE “bodies” around the physical one in an aura (Note: As seen by Kirlian/GDV photography, see Wikipedia re: the paranormal aura).  Key bodies are the astral, the mental (or reasoning), the etheric, among several others. 2) THE BRAIN IS NOT THE MIND. The mental/reasoning body is the basis/source of the mind. 3) All these “bodies” go with you in the death transition, especially including the mind.  4) In the next step, all these bodies and energetic DNA will proceed with you into the astral plane or dimension. 5) do not fear death as it is merely a transition to another “form”.

See the more detailed excerpts below.  Also, a short list of other reinforcing books. To me, these were "startling" concepts, but comforting in their believability as they “fit” based on other related research.

There does need to be more scientific research especially on 1) electromagnetic/energetic & biophotonic properties of DNA, and 2) functions of the aura (or bio-energy field)!  Russian and German scientific researchers are “on track” to one day scientifically prove life continues after death. Dr. Fritz-Albert Popp and son Jurgen at University of Marburg, Germany continue early work on electromagnetic aspects/versions of DNA and cell biophotonics as members of the Int’l Institute of Biophysics, and among others, Dr. Peter Geriaev in Russia with a breakthrough in biophotonic electromagnetic DNA termed Wave Genetics or bioholography. His research will revolutionize current genetic science now based entirely on bio-chemicals. And, Dr. Konstantin Korotkov, Director at the St. Petersburg State Tech University, who concentrates on aura (or bio-energy field) research as Founder/President of the Int’l Union of Medical and Applied Bioelectrography, has actually produced early Kirlian/GDV photographs which may be of the “soul” or aura leaving dying human bodies. Unfortunately, American research on these two “niches” is relatively modest, especially on the aura --- probably due to reluctance based on its India paranormal history . Materialist brain researchers continue to believe that the source of the mind must be someplace in the brain or physical body. And, narrowly educated atheists do not believe in any perceived afterlife.

Also includes information on Earth history and quantum physics. Purchase strongly recommended.

“At the death of the physical body, you will discover that your consciousness lives on and your evolution continues.

“Ascension is not some lofty spiritual concept designed by the minds of man, it is the literal, tangible scientific process of the evolution of consciousness and biology with the laws of energy mechanics that apply to a multidimensional reality system.  All souls will eventually evolve and ascend through a 15 dimensional scale to re-emerge as sentient identity within realms of pure consciousness beyond the dimensional systems.  Whether or not you view ascension and multidimensional evolution as a reality while you are alive on Earth, you will be directly faced with that reality once your consciousness has passed out of physical life and into the multidimensional framework.   How well you prepare for that discovery now will determine the ease with which you are able to take your next evolutionary step once you “wake up on the other side”

“The term “Ascension” represents much more than some lofty spiritual concept invented by the finite human psyche in order to give purpose to its finite existence.  Many in the earthly scientific communities believe that life is limited to the physical expression and that consciousness is the result of the body’s biochemical/neuro-electrical functions.  Following these erroneous beliefs they draw an equally erroneous conclusion that consciousness ends at the death of the physical body. Consequently, human science will be confronted with a whole new order of multidimensional reality and a whole new science.

“The process of ascension is not some quasi-religious concept based upon the meandering of the human mind.  Ascension is instead a highly SCIENTIFIC process that represents the universal order through which consciousness experiences itself as being.  Ascension also involves the understanding of morphogenetic fields or the form holding energy constructions that allow matter to build into individuated forms.  Ascension therefore is a science with specific mechanics that allow for the evolution of consciousness from simple to more complex forms.  Every being in existence is involved in this evolutionary process and applies to each and every one of you.  The choices one makes in thought and deed will determine the quality of experience, or lack thereof, that will be personally encountered.

“DNA is built upon minute electro-tonal (i.e., multi octave) patterns of multidimensional frequency and the energetic imprint of the DNA goes with you in the death transition. The content of that pattern will determine how high your consciousness will be able to travel (progress) in the system once it is released from the body. Whatever frequencies are contained within that imprint will determine the specific dimensional placement after death.

“This “system” blueprint has called your races forward toward an unseen destiny which is the return of immortality and the (eventual) reunion of the consciousness of man with its Prime Creative Source.  In terms of the soul’s perspective, the challenges and hardships faced along the way in Earth life are understood to be lessons in growth as human consciousness evolves to remember the truth of its eternal existence and embrace the beauty of its multidimensional identity. From the perspective of a human consciousness focused within a physical body on Earth, those challenges can seem, at times, overwhelming.  Without consciousness recognition of the purposes, processes and objectives of the evolutionary plan, the hardships can appear to be unbearable and without meaning.

“All human souls are involved with the exact same process of evolving the genetic “package” and the consciousness to higher dimensional levels; some souls are just further along in this journey.  This is a process by which the life forms evolve through matter particles and anti-particles upward through the 15 dimensional scale, from dense matter solidity to pure, non-mattered-based conscious energy substance.

“All dimensions exist in the same space, but seem to operate separately due to the particle pulsation rates of which they are composed.  The degree of angular rotation of particle spin shifts 90 degrees from one dimension to the next while remaining invisible to each other.  In the universe there are 15 primary dimensional bands.  Dimensional frequency bands group in sets of 3 and each set of three dimensions represents a Harmonic Universe.  Thus there are five Harmonic Universes within one (overall) dimensional Universe. The degree of angular rotation of particle spin shifts 90 degrees from one dimension to the next within one Harmonic Universe.  In each Harmonic Universe containing three dimensions, there are two 90 degree shifts of the angular rotation of spin between particles.  Between one Harmonic Universe and the next there is a 45 degree reverse angular rotation of particle spin. This 45 degree reverse angular rotation of particle spin creates a Magnetic Repulsion Zone, or void between Harmonic Universes, which keeps the reality fields contained there within separated from each other.  Through this structure of relative angular rotations of particle spin, the holographic illusions of multidimensional reality, matter, time, space, movement and individuation of form are perpetually created and sustained. Entities existing below the 7th dimension possess physical biological forms. Dimensions 7 through 9 possess the etheric matter form.

“These multidimensional electromagnetic fields are collectively referred to as the bio-energetic system or the aura field of a manifest form. The aura field has seven primary inner layers (i.e., bodies) which correspond to dimensional frequency bands 1 through 7. The aura field also has seven outer layers which represent the form-holding MORPHOGENETIC imprints for the seven inner layers of the aura field. The morphogenetic imprint holds the instructions and design for form-building in a type of digital or electronic encoding. The seven outer layers correspond to dimensional frequency bands 9 through 15.

Note 1. DNA alone is incapable of storing the complete blueprint of the human form.  There simply is not enough data storage in 20,000 genes and thus is not the entire blueprint.  “Materialists” refuse to believe that there is an essential non-physical morphogenetic field of inherited patterns that function as an overlay to the genome, enlarging its scope with non-physical encoding.

“The perceptions of your present races are focused within the middle range of the third dimension.  In order for humanity to evolve into higher dimensional fields, the frequency patterns of dimensions four, five and six must be brought into manifest expression with the energetic grid of Earth. The frequencies or sound-tones must also become operational within the active DNA strands.  The energetic imprint of the DNA is carried with the personal morphogenetic field and consciousness after physical death of the body.  (Note: Morphogenetic fields are the form holding patterns through which matter forms. Rupert Sheldrake postulated on their existence, but proposed no physical mechanism.)  Whatever frequencies are contained with that imprint will determine the dimensional placement of the consciousness after death.   The ultimate success of DNA* building lies in the hands of the embodied consciousness who personally directs the process by the way in which personal energy
 is used and applied.

*Note 2:  Our current scientific community is thoroughly confused about the multiple strands of DNA, declaring only a few as having a known usage – and calling the remainder “junk DNA.”  Over 97% of DNA has an unknown function! However, if it were junk, the sequence of the “syllables” i.e., the nucleotides in DNA, should be completely random.  In fact, they are not random at all, and current scientists now believe that this DNA contains some kind of code with function completely unknown or undetermined.

“(At death), you will move your consciousness through a dark tunnel, with a bright light at its end, the same effect as in a Near-Death-Experience (Note: the subject of much book investigative reporting).

“Multiple reincarnational** identities represent portions of a person’s soul awareness evolving.   To the soul-self identity, the immediate incarnates in its incarnational family are recognized as living sub-personality fragments of its own identity whose reality simultaneously takes place with the dimensional bands contained within the soul-self’s DNA.  The DNA represents electro-magnetically encoded digital imprints of the other living portions of your identity.

**Note 3: Reincarnation occurs only in the first Harmonic Universe. “You reincarnate into multiple forms and situations because one lifetime is in no way sufficient time, nor does it offer sufficient exposures to enough diverse situations to give the fragment-spirit the understanding necessary. The best way to learn about poverty, or being rich, or being helpless, or being powerful, or being female, or being male is by experiencing lifetimes in such circumstances.”  Book source: Andareon Theory communication.

“Consciousness and matter are both composed of these units of electro-tonal energy and so both spiritual and scientific mastery are brought together through the applied knowledge of electro-tonal energy dynamics.   For the smallest units of energy in the cosmos you could find 800 billion billion units in an average 3 dimensional photon.  They represent the “divine substance” out of which the cosmos is composed.

“There is an organizational intelligence and sentient creative force of vast proportion that is responsible for the design and creation of the cosmos, i.e., the Central Creative Force you call God***.   Members of the benevolent Guardian Alliance (Note: Who communicated this book) are beings from higher reality fields, dimensions ten through fifteen, who have evolved beyond the manifestation of biology, physical and etheric matter substance into states of conscious pre-matter form who appear as forms of light when they enter your system**** or, occasionally take on the appearance of biological forms in order to interact with Earth life (Note: For example: Jesus from the 12th dimension).

Book #2. “The Treasure of El Dorado” Chapter 7.  The Bodies of Man. EXCERPTS from dictated communications by Ascended Masters.  Joseph Whitfield 213 pages.  Available through Amazon.com. Purchase strongly recommended.

“The value of the TREASURE is literally priceless since it could not be purchased with all the material wealth of all worlds. The asset is the SECRET OF OVERCOMING DEATH.

“Few indeed are aware of the totality of their being. Existing within and around the physical bodies are IMPERISHABLE bodies.  These other bodies interpenetrate the physical body as well as extend beyond it. The various bodies which constitute the total potential of all developing human beings are: the physical matter body, the astral (antimatter) body, the etheric (Christ) body, the mental body and the emotional body.  It is these other bodies that constitute the phenomenon referred to as an aura (NOTE: Which has been proven to exist by special photographic techniques, see Wikipedia aura paranormal). The reason that the aura is not readily seen by most people is that its range of vibration renders it invisible to the physical eye. One’s CONSCIOUSNESS and other higher faculties reside in this “spiritual” (frequency existing) body and are INDESTRUCTIBLE.

“WHEN PHYSICAL DEATH OCCURS, THESE OTHER BODIES LEAVE THE PHYSICAL BODY AS A UNIT AND BECOME THE OPERABLE VEHICLE THROUGH WHICH THE CONSCIOUSNESS CONTINUES TO FUNCTION IN OTHER DIMENSIONS!  While one is no longer physically incarnated, the astral body houses the other bodies after the transition called death. Unlike the physical body, however, the astral body is inviolable, (i.e.,incorruptible).

“Let us examine some of the functions which the various aspects of the astral body serve while one is physically incarnated.  The subconscious is the mechanism which performs those vital functions that produce automatic actions and reactions on the physical level. Examples of this would be breathing, beating of the heart, blinking of the eyelids, digesting, etc. It is the subconscious which permits the formation of habits and which must be reprogrammed in order to break habits and existing beliefs.  The subconscious however does not have the capacity for rational thought. Everything that is recorded in the brain is also recorded in the subconscious.  The subconscious contains total memory information FROM ALL PREVIOUS LIVES AND EXPERIENCES (as recorded in the energetic DNA).

“The brain is the memory bank while physically incarnated. The subconscious mind is the memory bank for your total experiences. Whatever is recorded in the brain is recorded automatically in the subconscious as well.

“Consider that quality of the astral body that is called soul.  Think of a cassette tape (i.e., the energetic DNA).  When the tape is blank, it can be said to contain no soul.  Now fill it with recordings.  What we have done is to impart attributes to a previously empty cassette.  We have thus CREATED SOUL.  When the life ends, the tape (i.e., the surviving energetic DNA) is filled with that essence called SOUL.  Within the total soul are many completed “tapes” containing the records of all incarnational experiences. The completed “tapes” form the memory bank, or the akashic record of each individual being.  Whatever information is contained (from past lives), whether it be good or evil, true or false, right or wrong, correct or incorrect, can and does influence your well-being in your present life. This is why many people go through lifetime after lifetime making the same mistakes over and over again.  In summary, the subconscious and the soul lack discernment. They cannot reason.

“The conscious part of your mental body provides you with the powers of thinking.  Thinking is the capacity to discern, reason, rationalize, to exercise self-discipline, to deduce, to employ logic, to analyze, inquire, synthesize, judge, investigate, observe, etc.  THE BRAIN IS NOT THE MIND. It is one of the instruments that the mind uses while you are manifested in the physical planes (dimensions) of expression.  The mental body has three distinct parts or levels: the conscious, the subconscious, and the superconscious.  A primary function of the mind or mental body is to produce awareness, an incredible tool in the development of potential.  As a component of the mental body, the subconscious has the ability and the capacity to record all sensual, mental, and emotional, and spiritual experiences and to “play back” this information, functioning like a tape recorder (or digital recorder).

“The etheric (or Christ) body has been described by enlightened writers. Often referred to as the light body due to the effect produced in the atomic structure of this body by the speed of the electron movement within the atoms which equals or exceeds the speed of light.  Achieving the status of etheric (or Christhood) confers upon the recipient many powers not found in the lesser bodies. Jesus represents the best example in history.  Among the powers he was known to have demonstrated were: bilocation, levitation, materialization, healing, etc.  Jesus constantly reminded his followers that they could do all of these and even greater things.

“When one achieves the full etheric (or Christ) vibration, then death will no longer have dominion over him.  It gives him the power to alter his vibrations at will, and thus he can freely travel through the physical, astral and etheric vibrations.

“It is the emotional body that gives you a feeling nature, i.e., that produces the capacity for experiencing all levels of emotion such as joy and sorrow, love and hate, compassion and malevolence, ecstasy and depression, pleasure and pain, excitement and indifference. The emotional capacity is experienced on all levels of expression.

“The superconscious is the functioning mind of the etheric or Christ self. What is required is that man of earth become aware of the existence of the incredible power of the superconscious mind and desire its attainment. To give you some idea of the scope of the superconscious mind, think of a rating scale numbered from 1 to 10 as representing the range of man’s conscious mind in Earth. Then classify the most outstanding geniuses of Earth history using 10 as the ultimate that is attainable. You will find that such men as Einstein, Swedenborg, Whitman, etc., would be rated from perhaps 7 through 9. By comparison, a pure state of superconsciousness would range into the hundreds or thousands. It is quite easy to conclude from this, is it not, that the means exist to literally transform Earth into a paradise by educating mankind as to its potential.

“These bodies constitute man’s potential as he continues to evolve within the “system.”  Each aspect of our total self is indispensable to the function and purpose of our total being.

Many of the above Concepts based on my research were confirmed in Australian Michel Desmarquet's abduction to a highly advanced planetary culture (see below).  Readings by Edgar Cayce also confirm.

***Abduction to the 9th Planet, republished under title “Thiaoouba Prophecy” by Michel Desmarquet, Arafura Publishing, Australia He was abducted physically in 1987 for nine days by the spiritually most highly evolved and most technically developed planet in our galaxy. He confirmed and detailed the existence of IMPERISHABLE aura, reincarnation, and astral/etheric
afterlife on progressively more advanced planets !! Excerpts below.
“Your Astral body, which inhabits every normal human being, transfers to its higher-self all the sensations that are experienced during a lifetime in a physical body. A normal human Astral body contains approximately four billion, trillion electrons, exactly marrying your physical shape.
“The more you cultivate your mind, the less you will be burdened by your physical body and the quicker you will proceed through your cycle of lives. Regarding the problems of your planet, Michel, the solution depends on love, not money. People need to rise above hate, resentment, jealousy and envy, and put their neighbor before themselves.
“There are nine categories of planets. You are on the planet Thiaoouba which is the top of the scale. Earth is a planet of the first category which could be likened to a kindergarten. We are one of three planets which are the most highly evolved.

Thanks, Krista for these very helpful interviews.

For anyone who is interested, check out The Teilhard Project that seeks to introduce Teilhard to a new generation. This project is coordinated by producer Frank Frost who is creating a two-hour TV documentary on the life of Teilhard, to be shown in 2015. He is also coordinating a website, www.teilhardproject.com , through which he hopes to connect folks whose lives have been influenced by Teilhard. Check it out. Maybe contribute a blog!

I have to admit that this is the first time I have had such a disappointment in the produced show. There were so many important topics discussed in the unedited podcast with Ursula King. I think you would have done best to spit this into two shows and not cut out so much that Ursula King had to say. I would love to have a transcript of the unedited conversation with Dr. King.

Trent Gilliss's picture

Susan, thanks for the feedback. Yes, there were many difficult editorial decisions made. And one of those included how much to leave in of Dr. King. I'm so glad you took the time to listen to the unedited interview though. She's an absolute pleasure. As far as the unedited conversation, I don't have that on hand but let me see what I can do. Cheers!

I thought no one could understand what I felt in my soul, but couldn't put into words. I have been convinced for a long time that the next step in human evolution is the evolution of the mind and spirit. I also feel intuitively that we will reach a "tipping point" where if we can not take these steps we are in danger of self-destruction and it is closer than we think!

After listening to this broadcast, I was surprised I had not heard of Teilhard at some time in my life. Although I don't agree with a lot of what I heard about Teilhard’s writings and ideas, especially in the matters of evolution, it was interesting to hear about how he thought "...humanity would develop capacities for collective, global intelligence; that a meaningful vision of the earth and the universe would have to include, as he put it, "the interior as well as the exterior of things; mind as well as matter." (Tippett and Teilhard). Some of what he said could be almost foreshadowing how connected the world is today.

In Teilhard's time, there was the capacity in the world to communicate with almost anyone in the world, but it did take a lot more time. The things that have changed today are the medium used, and the speed at which communication can happen. With advances in internet technologies, and satellite transmissions, everyone in the world, given the right technology, is capable of communicating with another person(s) on the opposite side of the world instantly. This could almost seem like two halves of a brain working together. I didn't really take what Teilhard said as a single organic global intelligence, but one compromised of all peoples from all places through the use of our technology.

From what I understood, Teilhard believed in God and in the theory of evolution. He believed that we, as a species, were still evolving, but maybe in a new way. It seemed like he thought humans were going to evolve more in the mind than in form. I could see how humans may appear to be "evolving" in a way due to the technology we have developed, and how it has allowed us to communicate in 'real time' across the globe, but I don't see us all being telepathically linked, or becoming some hybrid like the Borg (yes mentioned the Borg).

Dr. Wilson said, “…cultural evolution can produce this field of behaviors that enables humans to adapt to certainly all environments. That's why we spread over the planet and hundreds of ecological niches put us humans in a new environment. And we'll adapt, but only because we have this flexible system of symbolic thought that enables us to adapt. That's why it qualifies as a new evolutionary process and why we became the dominant species on earth for better or for worse." The kind of evolving he is talking about really doesn't sound like the theory of evolution, but rather a human’s normal ability to adapt and overcome obstacles that get in our way, like different environments. I don't see how this really qualifies as a new evolutionary process.

Despite some of my disagreements with Teilhard, some of his idea almost seemed to foreshadow our global communications of today. Knowing what I do today, if I was sent to Teilhard’s time, my knowledge may also seem pretty farfetched to the people of days past. I may have to look more into Teilhard to have a better understanding of his thoughts and theories. A very interesting man.

I discovered Teilhard through a former Dominican priest and biblical scholar who teaches Catholics about the Scripture. He linked Paul's teachings of the Body of Christ in Colossians, Galatians and other passages to Teilhard's vision of us all accelerating toward the Omega point which is one and the same as the Sacred Heart of Jesus. To understand Teilhard is to understand the Jesuit training and development of the spiritual aspect of the human through the Spiritual Exercises. And then you realize there is no seperation between the secular and the sacred. It's not unlike what many eastern philosophies are based on, in particular Buddhism. And there is no past or present, things both living now and those that once lived just Are. Some of this is my own formulation of thoughts that are pulled from my own readings of Thomas Merton, Watt's The Way of Zen, scripture studies of Paul's letters (which in my opinion are some of the most timely and timeless prose and relevant for all eras), spending five days chanting the Psalms in a Benedictine monastery, and praying daily. Everything that Teilhard has written has made sense to me and I have found his voice from the last century, the voice of my teenage years when I thought there should not be any separation between the Creation and Evolution camps, as I studied theology in Catholic high school. What I find most interesting is that everything points to this harmonic convergence of matter and unbounded by time as God sees it, which can be attained from any point of study, but most simply and complete if you have only the faith that resides within the mustard seed. Devout Catholics as the parents of Teilhard knew this without doubt, just as simply breathing. And I offer today for my fellow Catholics and all others that the Contemplation and daily prayer of the Sacred Heart of Jesus will illuminate your mind and make all this very transparent and comprehensible as it has for me. I come from a Catholic background that was based on a pragmatic routine as well as a spiritual having parents practicing devotions to both Mary and Jesus. And the keyword is practice. Anything you do with joyful conviction reaps wonderful enlightenment and success. I agree with Andrew Revkin that you have no choice but be optimistic as Teilhard was because in my opinion this is the summation of all Gifts from God. It is the smile on your face.

Teilhard De Chardin was a rather fastinating man. He was a paleontologist, a priest and a philosopher. He even served in WW1 as a stretcher bearer for the french army. During the war he saw many horrible things that most people would never see in their lifetime. This really had an impact on Teilhard and his spiritual thinking.

Teilhard's thoughts, ideas and theories seemed to be way ahead of his time. He talked about evolution and spirituality and how they move towards each other. Humans evolve not only physically but spiritually as well. As we continue to evolve, so does our technology. Teilhard vision was that humans would communicate on a much bigger scale. He says humans will "intensify communication." But it is not just creating this means of communication he stressed but how people would use this technology and what would they go on to do with it.

Now days with the internet, Facebook, Twitter and so on, it seems that Teilhard was right. Our communication is on such a large scale right now. I can send a message to someone in China and they would recieve it within just moments. We have come a long way as a society since the time of Teilhard.

He also talks about how the human being longs to share experiences with one another. This is so true. How many kids love to show their parents something they learned or how many of us come back to work from an exciting weekend and can't wait to tell our co-workers. It seems that sharing the human experience is a rather important part of our lives. And now with Youtube, Facebook and other social media, you can share the human experience with the world.

It is a great time to live in with so many new technological advancements. We are basically living in Teilhard's vision. We are the future and we have to figure out how to utilize this great technology we have and bring us forward.
