Here is a poem I wrote inspired by today's interview with Jaroslav Pelikan.
A LANGUAGE THAT SHE HARDLY KNEW
“The only alternative to tradition is bad tradition”-- Jaroslav Pelikan, heard over Krista Tippett’s “On Being”, WNYC
She learned a love song when she was littleIn a language that she hardly knewO she would sing it as if she wrote itAnd she made each word sound true.
One day her lover asked her a questionAbout the language that she hardly knewShe could not answer, and so she left himBut returned with words she knew.
You’ll find that couple singing their love song,In the language that only they knowBut all their children sing like that coupleIn a language that they hardly know.
