Here is a poem I wrote inspired by today's interview with Jaroslav Pelikan.

A LANGUAGE THAT SHE HARDLY KNEW

“The only alternative to tradition is bad tradition”
-- Jaroslav Pelikan, heard over Krista Tippett’s “On Being”, WNYC

She learned a love song when she was little
In a language that she hardly knew
O she would sing it as if she wrote it
And she made each word sound true.

One day her lover asked her a question
About the language that she hardly knew
She could not answer, and so she left him
But returned with words she knew.

You’ll find that couple singing their love song,
In the language that only they know
But all their children sing like that couple
In a language that they hardly know.
