A year after 9/11, I boarded a flight from Muscat, Oman toDoha, Qatar. I was the only Westerner onthe plane. The curious looks that borderedon suspicion were directed at me—because of my ethnicity. That day I learned the sting of xenophobia, andgarnered a new appreciation for its inherent unfairness.
When we are able to distance ourselves from each other, weare able to treat others as sub-human. Thesad irony is that when we are consumed by such a frame of mind, we forfeit our ownhumanity.
