The literal shadow remains the only wholeness of self one sees and experiences after the spirit is torn asunder by the trauma and insanity of war. This shadow small and large is a symbol of struggling faith in a broken spirit. God does enter our brokeness and reflects a shadow of a spirit that can be made whole.
