That question "is it all just programming?" —who hasn't asked that of themselves as human beings? How are we different from operating (or operative) systems? Are we anything more than means to an end we don't understand, given identities as animating distractions? We want to believe so. Or at least believe there is an end that we serve as those means. I love that the protagonist is named Theodore in this film. Theos receives some worthy meditation indeed. What is holy in us but that aching and seeking in each other we so scantly understand? That moment at the end as Amy Adams' character gently places her head on Theodore's shoulder —glorious.
